Motivation
-------------

Brazil is in a great boost phase of its maritime activity, developing a broad program of shipbuilding construction and offshore exploration and production. With a growing demand for ships and offshore structures, new technological challenges emerge in the various industrial sectors.

In order to enable new opportunities, it will come the NAVTEC 2012 - International Conference on Offshore and Marine Technology: Science and Innovation, a parallel event with the International Fair in the area of Naval and Offshore Engineering: 1st Naval Cluster Fair/RS (www.polonavalrs.br). Among the many events that constitute it, WTSUB - Workshop on Technological Challenges in Monitoring, Inspection and Automation of Underwater Environments (WTSUB) and First Brazilian Underwater Robotics School aim at dealing with the challenges in Underwater Robotic for Offshore and Marine Industry.

WTSUB will occur in the city of Rio Grande - RS, from 22 to 24 March 2012, at the premises of the Federal University of Rio Grande - FURG. Rio Grande is the headquarter of a new naval pole in southern Brazil. It began with the discovery of the Pre-salt layer, where Petrobras' growing demands for Supply Vessels, Platforms and Oil Tankers; it was the resumption of shipbuilding in Brazil. These demands should be provide by shipyards installed in Rio Grande during the next years.

The Workshop
-------------------

In its first edition, the WTSUB 2012 addresses the major technological challenges associated with underwater robotic, thus becoming a forum for presentation and discussion of research and technical developments. The focus generated a new perspective in terms of research and opportunities in the area. The event has as target public the students, researchers and professionals interested in this area.

The First Brazilian School
------------------------------

The School is focused in the foundations, algorithms, models, and devices used in Underwater Robotic for Offshore and Marine Technology. The School proposes to the students deal with teorical and practical problems. The idea is motivate the students to deal with underwater robotics problems and create condition to increase the work-force in this area.

Program
-------------------
6 plenary talks with international and national references in the area and 2 tutorials/labs during 3 days on topics of underwater robotic instrumentation, imaging and acoustic processing, mapping and navigation, ROV and AUV Technologies for inspection and exploration, and others will be given.

Student grants
-------------------

The WTSUB offers travel grants for its student members. The students that win the grants should participate in the underwater robotics competition in the end of the school using real and simulated robots. The requirement to apply for scholarship is the submission of a original two pages abstract about our work. It may be written in Portuguese, English or Spanish. Submissions must be in Adobe Portable Document (PDF) format 2-column IEEE conference, available at http://www.ieee.org/portal/cms_docs/pubs/confpubcenter/pdfs/samplems.pdf.

Submissions should be directed to:
